Myelopathy - Cord Compression
Myelopathy, also known as cord compression, is a condition that occurs when the spinal cord is compressed or damaged, resulting in a loss of function and sensation. This can occur due to a variety of causes, such as injury, degeneration, or tumors.
It’s important to consult with a neurosurgeon if you suspect you have myelopathy/cord compression. A neurosurgeon will be able to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms and recommend an appropriate course of treatment.

Causes
Causes of myelopathy – cord compression include:
- Degenerative conditions such as spinal stenosis, spondylosis, and osteoarthritis, which can cause the spinal canal to narrow and compress the spinal cord.
- Herniated discs, which can bulge out and put pressure on the spinal cord.
- Tumors or other growths that can compress the spinal cord.
- Trauma or injury to the spinal cord, which can cause swelling or bleeding that compresses the spinal cord.
- Inflammatory conditions such as transverse myelitis, multiple sclerosis, or spinal cord tumors.
Symptoms
Symptoms of myelopathy/cord compression vary depending on the location and severity of the compression, but common symptoms include:
- Weakness, numbness, or tingling in the arms, legs, or hands.
- Loss of coordination or balance.
- Loss of fine motor control, such as difficulty with buttoning clothes or writing.
- Loss of bowel or bladder control.
- Spinal cord injury can also cause severe pain and muscle spasms
Treatment
Treatment for myelopathy/cord compression will depend on the underlying cause of the condition and the severity of the symptoms. Some common treatments include:
Physical therapy: Physical therapy can help to improve flexibility and strength in the affected area.
Medications: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or pain relievers can be used to reduce pain and inflammation.
Injections: Epidural steroid injections can be used to reduce inflammation and pain.
Surgery: In some cases, surgery may be necessary to correct the underlying cause of the myelopathy/cord compression. Depending on the cause, such as herniated disc, spinal stenosis, and tumors, surgery may be performed to relieve pressure on the spinal cord.
Myelopathy can occur in any part of the spine, but is most common in the cervical (neck) and lumbar (lower back) regions.
