Spinal Tumours
Spinal tumors are abnormal growths that develop in or near the spinal cord. They can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous) and can affect any part of the spine.
The goal of treatment for spinal tumors is to remove or control the growth of the tumor while preserving as much function and mobility as possible. In some cases, the use of radiation or chemotherapy may be recommended to prevent the growth of the tumor.

Causes
Causes of spinal tumors include:
- Genetics
- Exposure to radiation
- Previous cancer treatments
- Infections
Symptoms
Symptoms of spinal tumors can include:
- Back pain that may be worse at night
- Weakness or numbness in the limbs
- Loss of bladder or bowel control
- Difficulty standing or walking
- Neck or back pain that radiates to the arms or legs
Treatment
Treatments for spinal tumors will depend on the type, location and size of the tumor, as well as the overall health of the patient. Non-surgical options may include:
- Radiation therapy
- Chemotherapy
- Pain management
In more severe cases, surgical intervention may be required. These may include:
- Microsurgical techniques to remove the tumor with minimal disruption to surrounding tissue
- Spinal reconstruction to stabilize the spine after removal of the tumor
- Stereotactic radiosurgery to deliver high-dose radiation to the tumor.
Spinal tumors can cause damage to the spinal cord and surrounding nerves, leading to motor and sensory dysfunction.
